Project Notice for 3rd Avenue Sidewalk Improvements
WHY IS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?Several local daycare and nearly 50 children walk or bike to Alpac Elementary School each day, many of them along 3rd Avenue NW. Without sidewalks, children and parents walk or bicycle in the street. This project will separate pedestrians and bicyclists from cars with new sidewalks. It will also support the Alpac Elementary School's educational and enforcement program, which encourages safe pedestrian behavior by youth and helps enforce traffic laws.
WHAT WILL THIS PROJECT CONSTRUCT?To the right, you will find a map of the project limits and a detail of the new sidewalk. Note, the sidewalk will only be constructed on the south side of 3rd Avenue NW. The work will remove the existing ditch and collect the water in an underground pipe. Existing sidewalks will be preserved to the extent possible, but driveways and wheelchair ramps at intersections will be replaced to meet strict accessibility requirements by the American Disabilities Act. Some minor utility modifications may be necessary at the time of construction and will require short interruptions.
WHO IS IN LEADING THIS PROJECT?The City of Pacific Public Works Department is coordinating the design and construction effort. Alpac Elementary School is leading the educational elements.
WILL THE CITY NEED TO PURCHASE ANY PROPERTY FOR THIS PROJECT?At this time, no property acquisition is anticipated.
HOW MUCH WILL THIS PROJECT COST?The project is expected to cost around $425,000. This includes design, construction and inspection fees.
WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS PROJECT?The Washington State Department of Transportation awarded the City of Pacific a Safe Routes to School Program Grant in the amount of $265,967. The remainder of the project costs are being funded through the matching funds by the City of Pacific. The City is pursuing additional grant funds to minimize costs to the City.
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION?Design was started in July 2009. Construction will likely begin in Spring 2010. Stay tuned for additional flyers as the project moves forward.
WHO DO I CONTACT IF I NEED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROJECT?Jim Morgan, City Engineer, at (253) 929-1115 or email him at jmorgan@ci.pacific.wa.us
